Beyond Banh Mi Phuong and Madam Khanh: More Banh Mi Shops to Try in Hoi An

We’re Still Working on This Guide

We’re checking more local banh mi shops and updating this article with our own photos, prices and experiences. This is not the final version yet, but we hope it can give you a few ideas for your Hoi An food trip.

Explore Hoi An • Local Food & Culture

When people talk about banh mi in Hoi An, two names usually come first: Banh Mi Phuong and Madam Khanh. They are famous for good reasons, and many visitors want to try them.

But there are other banh mi shops around town, too. Some are small places serving local customers every day. Others are popular with travelers who want something different.

If you have time for more than one sandwich, here are a few places and ideas to explore.

Why Try More Than the Famous Two?

Banh mi is a simple food, but each shop has its own way of making it. The bread, meat, vegetables and sauces can be quite different.

One shop may use more pâté. Another may have a sauce you really like. And sometimes a small shop near your hotel can make a very good sandwich.

We don’t think there is one banh mi that everyone will love the most. It depends on your taste.

Other Banh Mi Shops to Consider in Hoi An

1. Phi Banh Mi

Phi Banh Mi is another name you may see when looking for banh mi in Hoi An. It is an option to consider if you want to try a shop beyond the two most famous ones.

Before visiting, check its current location, opening hours and menu. We are still preparing our own detailed review, so we won’t rank its bread or fillings against other shops yet.

2. Banh Mi Sum

Banh Mi Sum is also worth adding to your list of places to check. Like many banh mi shops, its menu and daily availability may change.

We plan to visit and compare similar sandwiches before adding more comments about the flavor, portion size and value.

3. Small Neighborhood Banh Mi Stalls

Don’t forget the small stalls you see along the streets, especially in the morning. Some serve people on their way to work or school and may not be well known online.

These places can be interesting because they show how banh mi is part of daily life in Hoi An. Look for freshly prepared food, clean handling and a menu that suits your taste.

Our local note: This is a starting list, not a ranking of the best banh mi in Hoi An. We will add more shops after visiting them and checking the details ourselves.

What Should You Order?

If you are new to Vietnamese banh mi, you can start with a mixed sandwich (banh mi thap cam). It often includes several savory fillings, but the ingredients depend on the shop.

You can also look for grilled pork (thit nuong), egg (trung) or vegetarian (chay) options. Not every shop has every type.

If you don’t eat spicy food, you can say “Khong cay” (not spicy). If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, please ask about the ingredients before ordering.

How to Compare Banh Mi Fairly

If you enjoy trying different food shops, here is a simple way to compare them:

  • Choose similar fillings. Comparing a mixed sandwich with a plain egg sandwich won’t tell you much about the difference between shops.
  • Eat it fresh. The bread is usually better before it becomes soft from the fillings and sauces.
  • Pay attention to the balance. Do you like the bread, filling, vegetables and sauce together?
  • Consider the full experience. Price, waiting time and friendly service also matter.

You don’t need to try everything in one day. One banh mi for breakfast and another on a different day is a nice way to explore.

What About Prices and Opening Hours?

Prices and opening hours can change, especially at smaller shops. We will add a checked comparison table when we have confirmed the latest details.

For now, please check each shop’s current information before making a special trip. If you arrive late in the day, some fillings may already be sold out.

A Simple Food Walk in Hoi An

One thing we like about Hoi An is that you don’t need a complicated plan to enjoy the food. You can walk through the streets, stop for a banh mi, have a drink and continue exploring.

If you visit Banh Mi Phuong on Phan Chau Trinh Street, our small takeaway drink shop, Hoa Arika Hoi An, is just nearby at number 2A.

We make refreshing drinks naturally sweetened with coconut, nipa and arenga palm blossom nectars instead of refined sugar. You are welcome to stop by if you want something cool to enjoy with your sandwich.

Final Thoughts

Banh Mi Phuong and Madam Khanh are great places to start your Hoi An food journey. But don’t feel that you must stop there.

Try another shop if you have the chance. You may find a sandwich that fits your taste even better. And that is part of the fun of exploring local food.
